To our valued Domestiq Members:
In November of 2021, we began work on what would become Domestiq. We set out to address the pain points we experienced as active members of the larger Peloton community, knowing there were others just like us who wanted innovative, easy-to-use tools to enhance their Peloton experience. In the fall of 2022, we launched domestiq.net.
The Challenge Earlier this year, Peloton informed us that we would need to use new interfaces/APIs to access data about their classes and workouts completed by our mutual members. To meet our obligations as authorized Peloton developers, we would need to substantially reengineer the production-hardened processes that have allowed our members to download over 20 million workouts and perform millions of Peloton actions using their connected Domestiq accounts. While we worked to understand the requirements of the new development agreement, Peloton was extremely responsive and enabled additional interfaces needed to fully support all Domestiq features.
Our Decision This internal review gave us an opportunity to evaluate our options. We had expected Domestiq to operate under a “freemium” business model, where premium feature subscriptions would fund development and hosting for all Peloton members. However, even with many thousands of Domestiq members, we don’t believe there would be sufficient numbers of premium subscribers to support the business.
This has never been “all about the money”–Domestiq was a passion project from the beginning. However, faced with significant ongoing hosting costs, the substantial engineering effort required to meet new API requirements, and uncertain revenue prospects, we’ve made the difficult decision to wind down operations during the first week of November. If those plans change, we will notify members via email.
What Happens Next Peloton has graciously allowed us to continue using their legacy interfaces through early November so that we can support the current programs in progress. In the meantime, we’ve built simple tools so you can save your Domestiq Class Lists, Class Ratings, and Workout Notes for future reference: Export your Domestiq items now.
Thank You From the beginning, Domestiq was about creating a community that supported each other in achieving their fitness goals. Your ideas and suggestions informed everything we built. Your enthusiasm and support provided the motivation and encouragement to keep improving. Thank you for making our journey meaningful.
Stay fit,
John, Andy, and Chris
